PROMOTION HOPES

Coventry City will be beginning the new season in League One looking to get swiftly promoted into the Championship. The club will be looking to strengthen the squad once the transfer embargo is lifted shortly. This is the aim of the manager Stephen Pressley, who has been holding out trials of several players in the last few weeks. Two foreign players – Spanish defender Daniel Orozco and Portuguese midfielder Fabio Martins – have been on trial at the club in recent weeks. However, they have not impressed the manager sufficiently in order to earn a new deal once the transfer embargo is lifted.

As a result, they have been told to return to their home country. After the recent 3-2 defeat against Mansfield Town in a friendly match, Pressley has said that he does not know whether he will be continuing his interest in Fabio Martins. According to him, the Portuguese winger has impressed in certain areas, but he does not know whether he will be good enough for a team that aims to get promoted. The situation was a little different with Orozco after the defender suffered an injury just after his arrival to the club.

However, Pressley is quite happy with the effort he has put in just to come to the club, and he will certainly take a look at him in the future.

“Fabio showed flashes of quality but whether or not I am going to pursue that, I don’t know. I have been pretty definite about the type of player I am looking for in that position but I don’t think he quite carries that DNA that I am looking for; that really electrifying pace. He’s a very special football player, there’s no doubt about that, and obviously Danny Orozco came in and unfortunately got injured,” said Pressley.

PRESSLEY IMPRESSED BY FERGUSON

Coventry manager Steven Pressley is the latest to praise Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson after he has labelled the 71-year-old as an inspiration to all managers. Ferguson recently announced this decision to retire from his managerial career after more than 40 years of managing several clubs. However, he is widely known for managing Manchester United former than 26 years. During this period, he has managed to lift 38 titles with the club. This trophy haul includes Premier league and Champions League titles as well.

The longevity of Ferguson has always been spoken of as a model for several clubs, who constantly change their managers. Ferguson almost came close to losing his job after three years without a trophy at Manchester United, but he has since gone on to create a legacy at the club that will be hard to overcome. Pressley has said that the most important characteristic of Ferguson is his will to win, which is extremely strong even at the age of 71 years. Over the course of his incredible managerial career, Ferguson has overseen 1499 matches yet he retains the same will to win.

Pressley has also praised the way Ferguson has managed to create a style of football, which has become synonymous with Manchester United.

“He’s an inspiration to us all in terms of his desire about his job and the intensity in which he goes about it, he’s never lost that. He’s never satisfied even when he wins the league because the next time he wants his team to win it again with even more style. He’s embraced new methods and changed with the game but he’s still stayed true to the old school values, he’s never lost his hunger and always looks to improve his team no matter what they achieve,” said Coventry manager Pressley.

CARRIED AWAY

The Coventry City manager Mark Robins has said that the players got carried away with the occasion after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crewe Alexandra. Coventry came into the match on the back of a brilliant run of form, which has seen them go on an unbeaten run in the last four matches. As a result of this form, they have been able to close the gap on the club’s in the play-off position. Coventry were expected to challenge for promotion spot, and Robins is extremely delighted that they are finally close to achieving the same. However, he said that the occasion got to the players during the match against Crewe Alexandra.

As a result of this defeat, Coventry City now face an uphill task to progress to the next round of the Johnson paints trophy. Coventry will have two more matches to recover the form before they face Crewe in the return leg. Coventry faced Crewe Alexandra in front of more than 30,000 fans, who were expecting the home team to win quite comfortably. Due to this electric atmosphere, Coventry started throwing men forward and forgot the task of defending. This allowed Crewe to score three goals and take a commanding position in the tie.

“It was an electric atmosphere but having created numerous chances we started to get anxious and we left the middle of the pitch wide open. You’ve got to give credit to Crewe because from their point of view it was a perfect away performance. And we knew that was what they were going to do so it’s disappointing that we didn’t stay calm. It didn’t help that they had a goalkeeper in inspired form. We were a victim of our own phenomenal support,” said the Coventry manager after the match. Coventry will face Yeovil town during the weekend.

LEARNING CURVE

The Coventry manager Mark Robins has said that he wants the club to use the FA Cup defeat at the hands of Tottenham as a learning curve to grow as a club. The club were in danger of being humiliated by the Premier league team after they can see that three goals in just 37 min of play. Clint Dempsey opened the scoring for Tottenham after just 14 min, while the star winger Gareth Bale doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute. Coventry then conceded a goal just 4 min after the goal from Bale to go into the half-time trailing the Premier league club 3-0.

Robins has admitted that he did fear that Tottenham might humiliate the League One club, but his team put on a spirited display in the second half to end the match by the same score. Robins has said that he is extremely happy that his team was able to draw the match in the second half. He has praised the movement and the passing football adopted by the Premier league club, which has seen them rise to the third position in the table. The Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas rested a number of high profile players for this match, but they were still able to steamroll their opposition.

“You have to try to learn something from every game. They are a top team, a real class act, and we know that next time we play a team like this we can’t afford to stand off them and allow them to dictate because once they get their tails up they are very difficult to stop. There was a touch of rabbits in the headlights about us at the start and after eight minutes you could fear a rout,” said Mark Robins. The club will be playing against Preston in the football league trophy during the weekend.

EXPECT BETTER

The Coventry City manager Mark Robins has said that he is expecting even better performance from his team after the 2-1 win over Morecambe in the third round of the FA Cup. Gary McSheffrey opened the scoring for Coventry City after just 37 min from the penalty spot. He was brought down by the opposition goalkeeper Barry Roche, as he tried to go round him. Carl Baker improved advantage for Coventry City after just 17 seconds following the restart in the second half. The second goal immediately after the break helped Coventry settle down in the match and they almost scored the third through Richard Wood.

However, he suffered was ruled out by the officials due to an offside position. However, Coventry City were made to pay for not taking advantage of the chances they had in the match, as Kevin Ellison scored with only 20 min remaining on the clock. It looked like Morecambe would be capable of pulling in the equaliser, but Coventry held on to progress to the next round of the cup. Even though they achieved a victory in the match, the manager Robins said that his team is capable of playing even better and they should show that in the next matches.

Coventry will be facing a tough home match against Sheffield United in the football league trophy next. “Initially we struggled to get on the ball and play the game we wanted to because they were keeping possession so well until we tweaked it slightly and got into the ascendancy and played some decent football. I thought some of the football was excellent from both sides, us particularly, but I still want more. The positives are that we have lost two or three players for this game and two or three came in and gave a good account of themselves,” said Robins.

ROBINS DEFENDS PROGRESS

The Coventry city manager Mark Robins has said that the team has definitely made progress in the last few weeks after they secured their second win of the season against Leyton Orient in the weekend. It has been a difficult start to the new season for Coventry City after they have been spending time closer to the bottom of the table. Now, as a result of this victory, they not only stay in touch with the teams trying to get out of the relegation zone, but they also get a much-needed confidence boost. Robins has been saying that the team has shown a lot of improvement in the last few weeks.

David McGoldrick scored a goal in the sixth minute, which was enough to give Coventry City all the three points from the match. Even though they still remain in the relegation zone, the manager believes that the victory was a step in the right direction for the players and the club. He is now hoping that the manage to use the confidence secure from this victory to go on and win more matches in the next few weeks. Robins has also said that he is extremely happy with the clean sheet as well.

“We were a little better. I’d still like us to be on the front foot more and get tighter to our opposition and there’s loads of little things and areas where we need to be better. It’s just about putting those building blocks in place and Saturday certainly helped. I’m satisfied with the progress because the lads have worked hard this week and they’ve stuck to the task so the three points are most welcome,” said the Coventry manager. The club will be taking on Arlesey Town in the FA Cup before playing against Crawley town in the league.
